Porsche opened up their 2011 North American International Auto Show appearance with the debut of the downright awesome 918 RSR Concept. Using the 918 Spyder as its basis, the RSR uses an electric system similar to the GT3 R Hybrid and a tweaked version of the V8 engine from the RS Spyder.

It’s been four years since Porsche’s last appearance in Detroit and they were looking to make a serious statement. Matthias Mueller, President and CEO of Porsche AG said: “We are back in Detroit with a clear message: Porsche further extends its competencies when it comes to performance and efficiency. The Porsche 918 RSR impressively demonstrates the passion of our engineers and designers for developing the world’s most advanced and best looking sports cars.”

The racecar concept was created by taking every badass piece of racing machinery that Porsche had, and then putting it into a blender. The racecar is based on the new 918 Spyder, although there has been lots of massaging done to the bodywork and aerodynamics.

Powering the 918 RSR Concept is an “updated” 563hp, 10,300RPM V8 engine, based on the unit from the RS Spyder. Lifting technology from the GT3 R Hybrid, the 918 RSR Concept also uses regenerative electric assist on the front wheels, throwing in an additional 204hp, for a total of 767hp.

The result is a great looking piece of auto art that looks fast sitting still. It was not announced which series or class, if even, this could would race in the US.

The 2011 North American International Auto Show (Detroit) saw the release of the 2012 Honda Civic Si Concept coupe and Civic Concept sedan. Both are pre-production concepts that point toward the look of the 9th-generation 2012 Civic.

As exterior “look” concepts, both cars feature very little details in terms of engine choice, suspension design, and electronic options. Instead, these point toward the exterior look of the next Civic, which should be pretty close to these concepts since Honda also announced a very close Spring 2011 on-sale date.

The Civic Concept sedan looks largely the same as the current Civic sedan, just with more lower body sculpting and a touch of Mercedes-Benz in the rear end. As the performance model, the Civic Si Concept coupe was covered in a bright red/orange paint job, which does wonders to evoke how sporty this car should be when it arrives. With sharper edges, the new Civic Si coupe looks a bit tougher up front but it still has front-wheel drive wheel arches that make the car look higher than it really is.

Both concepts are wearing 19-inch wheels and big brake kits that are sure to not make it into the final production versions. The 2012 Honda Civic Si is scheduled to go on sale this spring, in just a few months. The Si is sure to come with a high revving 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine while the base Civic will be fit with a fuel-sipping four-cylinder engine. Expect pricing to be announced soon.

From Honda:

The Honda Civic Si Concept coupe and Civic Concept sedan are making world debuts at the North American International Auto Show today, providing the first official glimpse at the styling direction of the all-new, ninth-generation 2012 model set to go on sale this spring, the company announced.

“The Civic is known for providing a balance of ‘just-right’ packaging, fun-to-drive character and outstanding fuel economy, at a price that even first-time buyers can afford,” said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda. “The redesigned Civic builds on this legacy and promises to be the best Civic yet.”

The 2012 Civic embraces the company’s vision as a “Civic for all people,” a phrase originally expressed in defining the goal of the first-generation Civic. With the widest array of engine choices available in its class, the 2012 Civic lineup intends to meet the needs of an increasing group of compact-vehicle buyers with a renewed vision of a “Civic for all people.” The diverse vehicle range includes a sedan and a coupe with conventional gasoline models, two sporty “Si” performance versions, along with one hybrid and a natural gas alternative-fuel variant. Collectively the depth of the Civic line offers a compelling balance between fuel economy, low emissions and fun-to-drive performance unlike any other vehicle in the industry.

As a new interpretation of the current Civic’s iconic “one-motion” mono-form shape, the upcoming, ninth-generation Civic conveys a more substantial, high-energy appearance. The exterior styling of both Civic concept models showcases the sedan’s and coupe’s clean-yet-powerful lines with steeply raked windshields, wide stances and pronounced character lines along the profile. The lower character line on both models broadens toward the rear fenders to enhance the dynamic feeling of forward energy. The front fender surface treatments form a complex, three-dimensional look to further enhance the image of sophistication and structural depth against the deeply set headlights.

The Civic Concept sedan takes on a sophisticated presence with a front grille defined by crisp lines and a solid bar that integrates a chrome Honda emblem. The look of the Civic Si Concept coupe conveys an aggressive demeanor with a more angular front fascia, mesh grille and a tapered rear roofline that flows smoothly into the trunk. The Civic Si Concept coupe is exclusively equipped with a rear air diffuser, a center-mounted exhaust outlet and a rear deck lid spoiler with dual vents. Each concept model has 19-inch machined alloy wheels.

Powertrain Technology
The Civic’s family of engines with “intelligent” Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (i-VTEC®) technology become even more fuel efficient for 2012. The upcoming Civic Hybrid offers the latest generation of the compact and lightweight Integrated Motor Assist™ (IMA™) gasoline-electric hybrid system and features the first application of a lithium-ion battery in a Honda hybrid.

Building on its emphasis on fuel-economy, most upcoming Civic models receive Honda Eco Assist™ technology, already available in the CR-Z and Insight hybrids. The 2012 Civic is the first U.S. Honda model to employ Eco Assist technology in a gasoline-only powered vehicle. Eco Assist is just one example of how the new Civic can be customized and configured by the drivers to suit individual preferences.

Additionally, Honda is expanding retail sales of the natural gas-powered Civic GX model, which is the only OEM-built, dedicated CNG passenger car assembled in America. The increased availability of the Civic GX helps bring inherently clean-burning natural gas technology to an even broader audience while also supporting diversity in transportation energy resources.

Safety
The 2012 Civic continues to emphasize safety and is anticipated to score well in both the federal government’s New Car Assessment Program1 (NCAP) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety2 (IIHS) vehicle evaluations. The 2001 Honda Civic Coupe was one of the first two passenger cars ever to earn the federal government’s top 5-star crash safety rating3 for the driver and front- and rear-seat passengers in both frontal and side-impact crash tests.

All 2012 Civics are equipped with Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) as standard equipment. Additionally, the ninth-generation Civic continues to provide Honda’s exclusive and innovative Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure for frontal collision energy management.

Accolades and Manufacturing
As a top-selling model for Honda, the current, eighth-generation Civic has sold more than 1.5 million units since the 2006 model went on sale in late 2005. The 2006 Civic earned both the prestigious Motor Trend “Car of the Year” and the North American Car of the Year awards.

The current-generation Civic continues to be a significant entry-point to the Honda brand for younger buyers, introducing on average more than 90,000 new-car customers under the age of 35 to the brand every year. More than 95 percent of all Civics sold in the U.S. as of calendar-year 2010 were made4 in North America at manufacturing facilities in either Greensburg, Indiana or Alliston, Ontario in Canada.

The Chrysler 300 has been redone for the 2011 model year, featuring a new ground-up design, but still retains its HEMI V8 option. Other new options include all-wheel drive, V6 power, and new interior/entertainment/safety electronics.

The Chrysler 300 has never really been one of our favorite American cars. As a Rolls Royce design knock-off, it always lacked the distinctive look that the Mustang, Camaro, and Challenger enjoyed. There are even Rolls Royce Phantom conversion kits floating around on the Internet. Don’t believe us? Search for it.

The car’s less than luxury feel was cemented with the rental car interior quality and options list. The one thing that the 300 had performance-wise was the HEMI V8 option, which has returned with the new model.

Totally redesigned, the 2011 Chrysler 300 has gained a few design elements in the front end that give it a more distinctive appearance. The 300 also features the 300C AWD model, with 19-inch wheels and a lowered suspension, and the 300C with its 363hp HEMI V8 engine. The 5.7-liter engine has the capability to go into four-cylinder mode by shutting down cylinders, giving it 25MPG.

From Chrysler:

Delivering the stylistic distinction, technological innovation, premium E-segment sedan features and quality at a legendary value, the all-new 2011 Chrysler 300 sedan made its world premiere at the 2011 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), writing a new chapter in the brand’s legendary history, while setting a new course for the American brand.

“The all-new 2011 Chrysler 300 is an icon of American ingenuity and symbolizes the greatness Detroit-designed vehicles offer the streets, highways and boulevards of the world,” said Olivier Francois, President and CEO — Chrysler Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “From its premium materials, state-of-the-art connectivity features, new chassis architecture and best-in-class power, the all-new Chrysler 300 embodies the brand’s new attitude in every detail. And to ensure our all-new Chrysler flagship delivers more than unmistakably bold and powerful American style to our customers, the Chrysler 300 team benchmarked the craftsmanship, technology and refinement of the segment’s best sedans to deliver a new world-class quality and performance symbol at an attainable price.”

The all-new 2011 Chrysler 300 sedan embodies the essence of the new Chrysler brand: delivering passion for design, people and the environment through expressive design, state-of-the-art connectivity and world-class levels of quality and efficiency.

A Collaboration of Detroit Style With World-class Craftsmanship
With more than 55 years of elegant proportions and head-turning style, the all-new 2011 Chrysler 300 delivers contemporary styling with design details unexpected in the segment. At the front, an all-new grille features seven deeply sculpted horizontal blades that express precision. The liquid-chrome finish of the blades and the new Chrysler wing badge provide a unique contrast against the beautifully drawn bright-chromed grille surround. Illuminating the road ahead are signature “key slot” headlamps with a scalloped lower edge. Inside, bi-functional projector headlamps are nestled next to LED-illuminated daytime running lamps, which together form a “C” shape for unmistakable on-road presence.

The profile of the all-new Chrysler 300 features the distinctive proportions of its predecessor with added design refinement for a more tailored appearance. Dramatic front-fender forms rise above the sculpted hood and are echoed by rear-quarter forms, which rise above the deck lid and travel down the vertical taillamps for an unmistakably bold signature silhouette. For improved aerodynamics and visibility, the all-new Chrysler luxury flagship’s windshield has been raked back 3 inches, while rolled-framed doors with thinner pillars improve outward visibility by 15 percent.

Elevating the all-new Chrysler 300 sedan’s rear-view presence is an integrated deck-lid lip spoiler with the new Chrysler wing badge proudly centered below. Jewel-like rear taillamps feature harmonious LED illumination, while signature “light pipes” illuminate for an alluring nighttime appearance. Straddling the vertical lamps, Chrysler 300 sedan’s rear fascia integrates a chrome appliqué that seamlessly connects the taillamp elements while emphasizing the road-holding stature of the flagship sedan. Hinting at the flagship sedan’s performance are two fascia-mounted oval dual exhaust tips.

Luxurious Environment with Premium Materials and Best-in-class Comfort
Combining world-class accommodations with American style, the all-new Chrysler 300 sedan’s interior delivers expressive style, authentic materials, passenger comfort features and precise fit and finish. Substantial interior upgrades on the all-new Chrysler 300 consist of soft touch materials, premium interior trim, available heated and ventilated Nappa leather seats, and real wood appliqués on the instrument panel, doors, center console and steering wheel.

Designed to exude a luxurious environment, the 2011 Chrysler 300 sedan features cast-skin instrument and door panels with three-dimensional dual gloss graining for a premium appearance and suppleness. Bright chrome contrasted with satin chrome accents give the Chrysler flagship sedan the appearance of milled aluminum. For added detail, a new instrument cluster features two large gauge faces with Sapphire Blue illumination and chrome ring accents. Providing a premium and contemporary environment is an all-new Sapphire Blue LED-illuminated ambient interior lighting.

Delivering best-in-class comfort, all-new seats were engineered with premium architecture and include a serpentine (S-shaped) spring suspension, all-new front-seat backs with four-way lumbar system that actuates up/down and fore/aft, and variable density foams applied in the lower seat, seat back, and bolsters for enhanced comfort “tuning.”

Designed for Passionate Drivers Who Value Substance and Individuality
Redesigned from the ground up, the all-new 2011 Chrysler 300 is the freshest entry in the U.S. standard full-size vehicle segment. While the standard full-size segment share has consistently held around 4 percent for the last 3 calendar years, the all-new Chrysler 300 series sedans will re-ignite the segment delivering elegant style, grand-touring performance, best-in-class seat comfort and the precision and quality of the world’s best E-segment luxury sedans at an attainable value.

Buyers of the 2011 Chrysler 300 sedan are inspired by thoughtful innovation, are passionate about driving and are interested to express their creativity and distinct personality through new experiences. The all-new Chrysler flagship sedan meets their demands by combining superior styling, confident handling, and the craftsmanship, premium details and technology that reinforce driving as a fun and pleasurable experience.

All-new 2011 Chrysler 300 series sedans are available in the United States in four highly equipped models: Chrysler 300, 300 Limited, 300C and 300C AWD. In addition, the Luxury and SafetyTec Groups provide customers with high-value content and innovative technology directly targeted for their specific needs.

Engineered with The Characteristics to Take on the World’s Best
Engineered and executed to deliver a world-class luxury sedan experience, the all-new 2011 Chrysler 300 sedan’s world-class body structure and chassis deliver a level of quality, capability and refinement that rival the best E-segment competitors from Europe, Asia and North America.

Maximizing its new ultra-rigid structural design, the all-new Chrysler 300 features quietness among the best in the segment. The all-new Chrysler flagship’s unibody packages material and structural design improvements, including two premium-composite underbody panels that provide more than eight feet of acoustic insulation, dual-pane acoustic windshield and front-door side glass, body-cavity silencing foam, under-flush rolled-framed doors with triple seals and acoustic wheel-well liners, all helping to absorb road noise and quiet the cabin.

The all-new 2011 Chrysler 300 features Chrysler Group’s new second generation E-segment architecture with redesigned front- and rear-suspension geometry delivering world-class handling, and all-new premium suspension hardware for world-class refinement. The all-new 2011 Chrysler 300 sedan’s suspension delivers the grand-touring performance expected from premium European luxury sedans, to make this all-new American flagship one of the best driving sedans in the world.

Taking its new second-generation E-segment architecture further, the all-new 2011 Chrysler 300C AWD delivers precise all-weather handling, world-class refinement and a lowered ride height for a more tailored appearance. The all-new Chrysler 300C AWD features a 0.5-inch (13 mm) tighter tire-to-fender fitment, a 0.15-inch (4 mm) lowered overall ride height and larger 19-inch wheels with wider P235/55R19 all-season performance tires.

Best-in-class 292 Horsepower with All-new Aluminum 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 Engine
Engineered to provide exceptional in-town and highway efficiency and performance, the all-new 2011 Chrysler 300 and 300 Limited models feature the newest powertrain from the automaker – the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine. When compared to the previous V-6 engines, fuel economy is improved by up to 8 percent with EPA-ratings of 18 city /27 highway.

Delivering 292 horsepower (up 63 percent) and 260 lb.-ft. of torque (up 36 percent) compared with the previous 2.7-liter entry-level engine, the new Pentastar V-6 engine also produces 42 more horsepower (up 16 percent), and 10 lb.-ft. more torque compared to the 3.5-liter V-6.

World-class Power and Efficiency with 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 Engine and its Fuel Saver Technology
Performance has been a hallmark of the “letter series” Chrysler 300 models since 1955, and the all-new 2011 Chrysler 300C builds upon that legacy with the legendary 5.7-liter HEMI®

Most Advanced All-wheel Drive (AWD) System in the E-Segment
The all-new 2011 Chrysler 300C AWD model features a segment-exclusive active transfer case and front-axle disconnect system to improve fuel economy by up to 5 percent. No other major automotive manufacturer offers the combination of these two independent technologies. The Chrysler 300C AWD sedan’s innovative AWD system seamlessly transitions between rear-wheel drive (RWD) and AWD with no driver intervention. When AWD is not required, the system automatically disconnects the front axle to maximize fuel economy while still providing the outstanding fun-to-drive performance and handling inherent in RWD vehicles.

World-class Precision, Execution and Quality Deliver Long-term Performance and Refinement
Chrysler’s commitment to providing customers with a new level of quality and craftsmanship started at the very beginning of the 2011 Chrysler 300 sedan’s development.

The Chrysler 300 sedans were benchmarked against best-in-class vehicles from Europe, Asia and North America to ensure world-class refinement for attributes such as material quality, interior quietness, seat comfort, and smooth and responsive handling characteristics. Chrysler engineers evaluated more than 320 physical characteristics of benchmark vehicles – including aspirational vehicles priced tens of thousands of dollars more than the all-new Chrysler 300 series sedans.

The 2011 Chrysler 300 was one of the first Chrysler Group vehicles to be evaluated by the company’s Perceived Quality team at the digital design phase. The Perceived Quality team evaluates vehicles from the perspective of the most discriminating customer and works with designers and engineers to enhance the fit-and-finish, surface quality, material options and even the sound quality of moveable parts like doors and storage bins.

Beginning with the all-new vehicles developed for the 2011 model year, Chrysler Group has increased the number of reliability testing miles by 50 percent. Chrysler engineers tested the 300 series sedans for more than 7 million miles during its reliability and durability evaluation in the company’s scientific labs, at the proving grounds and on public roads in various climates.

State-of-the-art Connectivity with Segment’s Largest Touchscreen Infotainment Center
The all-new 2011 Chrysler 300 sedan’s Uconnect® Touch integrates world-class infotainment and convenience technologies to keep passengers connected, comfortable and secure.

From touchscreen navigation to dual-zone climate controls, to the ability to check fuel prices and personalize convenience features, Uconnect Touch makes life in the all-new Chrysler flagship sedan an excellent experience for the driver and passengers. Chrysler 300 and 300 Limited models come standard with the Uconnect Touch 8.4 model, featuring easy-to-use controls to provide class-leading technology. With its massive 8.4-inch touchscreen display and user-friendly touch-key categories, information on the Uconnect Touch is clearly displayed and connecting and controlling personal mobile devices is simple.

The premium Uconnect Touch 8.4N model is available on the Chrysler 300 Limited and standard on the Chrysler 300C and 300C AWD models and includes more customer-convenient amenities than ever before, including the integration of segment-leading Garmin® navigation and SIRIUS Travel Link with real-time fuel prices, movie listings, sports updates and weather.

All-new 2011 Chrysler 300 Offers More Than 70 Advanced Safety and Security Features
The all-new 2011 Chrysler 300 features more than 70 safety and security features, including standard Keyless Enter-N-Go and electronic stability control (ESC) with segment-exclusive Ready Alert Braking and Rain Brake Support safety features to improve overall vehicle handling and performance.

Chrysler brand’s signature SafetyTec Group is available on the 2011 Chrysler 300 Limited, 300C and 300C AWD models and packages many first-time-available features including adaptive-forward lighting (AFL), high-intensity discharge (HID) projector high and low-beams with automatic headlamp leveling, Forward Collision Warning (FCW) with adaptive-cruise control (ACC), Blind-spot monitoring (BSM) with Rear Cross Path (RCP) detection, ParkSense® front and rear park assist system, LED-illuminated rear fog lamps, exterior mirrors with supplemental turn signals and approach lamp (300 Limited adds HomeLink universal transceiver, rain-sensing wipers and SmartBeam® headlamps to the package group).

In addition, standard front-row reactive head restraints, standard full-length side-curtain air bags, driver’s knee bag and standard front seat-mounted side-thorax air bags offer enhanced occupant protection to passengers in the event of a collision.

World-class Manufacturing (WCM) Transforms Brampton to Launch the All-new Chrysler 300 Sedans
For the Brampton plant, the launch of the Chrysler brand’s all-new flagship sedan had to be nothing less than world class.

In preparation for the launch of the Chrysler 300 series sedans, employees at Chrysler Group LLC’s Brampton Assembly Plant, located outside of Toronto, began transforming the facility as part of World Class Manufacturing (WCM), an extensive and thorough process to restore all facilities to their original and maximum functionality.

While Chrysler Group implemented manufacturing programs in the past, what makes WCM different is that it fully engages people in eliminating waste and empowers them to take ownership of the process.

To further improve the quality of the all-new Chrysler 300 sedans, a new Metrology Center was installed at Brampton. Used throughout the Fiat manufacturing system, the $20 million, 35,000 square-foot facility reflects the company’s heightened dedication to quality. Brampton joins Jefferson North Assembly Plant as one of the first Chrysler Group facilities and one of only a few Canadian automotive manufacturing facilities to utilize such technology.

The Metrology Center employs more than 30 people, who are responsible for measurement and validation of the body geometry. The tools within the Metrology Center are used to verify the capability of the vehicle’s entire sheet metal structure to the smallest of tolerances, as small as a human hair. The aim is to identify possible deviations between the product and the process. V-8 engine delivering 363 horsepower, 0-60 mph performance in less than 6 seconds and up to 25 highway mpg. In addition, the engine’s innovative Fuel Saver Technology allows for seamless transition between smooth, high-fuel-economy four-cylinder mode when less power is needed and V-8 mode when more power is in demand. When running in four-cylinder fuel saver mode, the engine delivers up to 20 percent improved fuel efficiency.

Fiat made its announcement at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show and, unfortunately, it wasn’t about the coming of the turbocharged Fiat 500 Abarth. Envisioning themselves as an Italian Mini brand, Fiat has sought to market the 500 model as European, quirky, artsy, and compact. To that end, they’ve enlisted art exhibitions and user customizable versions of the 500 model.

The US Fiat 500 will see the release of three different models – the Pop, Sport, and Lounge. All are powered by the 1.4-liter MultiAir engine. The Pop is the base model, a $15,500 manual version with 15-inch wheels and base options. $2,000 more, the Sport includes different bodywork, 16-inch wheels, red calipers, a new suspension, and a different interior. The top $19,500 Lounge model comes with a six-speed automatic, glass roof, 15-inch wheels, and many of the interior upgrades from the Sport model.

The "regular" gas-powered SLS AMG is already a powerful and fast hooligan luxury machine and the E-Cell is no different, pushing 528hp and 649 lb/ft of torque.

By OR Staff, Photography courtesy of Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz recently announced, at the 2011 North American International Auto Show (Detroit), that the SLS AMG E-Cell electric will be coming to dealerships in 2013. The “regular” gas-powered SLS AMG is already a powerful and fast hooligan luxury machine and the E-Cell is no different, pushing 528hp and 649 lb/ft of torque. That’s a bit less horsepower than the gas SLS AMG but the electric motors do give instant torque from a standstill. 0-60mph is claimed to be in about 4-seconds. The electric drive system, one motor in each wheel, also gives the E-Cell all-wheel drive grip, which should be good for quick launches and ripped up transmissions.

The E-Cell uses lithium batteries placed in front of the firewall, along the center tunnel, and behind the seats. This, combined with low-mounted motors, is supposed to help the E-Cell corner like an AMG should. Unfortunately, the in-wheel motors up front meant the change from double wishbone to multi-link strut front suspension. That’s a boo in our book but the SLS AMG E-Cell should still be able to rip apart any other electric car on the road.

We expect the E-Cell to come in at a premium price above the gas model, which is already north of $180,000. If you’re like us and have no money, maybe a Nissan Leaf is in your future. You can always paint that car an annoyingly bright neon color as well.

With a 247hp turbocharged inline-four engine, six-speed transmission, and all-new chassis, the Ford Focus ST is shaping up to be quite a little hot hatch. Having made its debut at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show, the Ford Focus ST was flanked by another interesting little tid bit from Ford – the Focus Race Car Concept.

Based on the Focus ST and using the same 2.0-liter EcoBoost inline-four engine, the Focus Race Car Concept is a fully caged and prepped racing version of the Focus. We spoke with Jost Capito, director of Global Performance Vehicles and Motorsport Business Development, about the race car concept and Ford’s plans with it (look for our video interview to come soon).

FIA Super 2000 roll cage

Designed as a turn key solution for race teams worldwide, the Focus Race Car Concept can be easily configured to different standards, FIA Super 2000, etc., and raced in different series. First off, the car will be raced in the 2011 British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) and the Nurburgring 24 Hours race.

Although the car can be rallied, the concept is designed for touring car road racing. We expect to see a few US teams pick up the ready made chassis for entry into the Grand-Am and World Challenge series.

The Focus Race Car Concept uses a nearly stock engine with the end teams left to configure the setup for their rules package. The cage is built to FIA Super 2000 specs and Ford fits the car with a Recaro seat, AiM MXL Pista display, fire system, and Ford Racing six-point harness.

The suspension consists of AST coilovers and Ford Racing swaybars. Ford Racing is also responsible for the front big brake kit, which uses 320mm two-piece rotors and racing pads. 18-inch BBS wheels and Hoosier racing tires finish out the Focus Race Car Concept recipe.

Like the Mustang “body in white” and Porsche GT3 Cup program, the Focus Race Car Concept points towards a factory built and sold racecar solution for teams. With the Ford Focus ST also being sold now as a global platform, development for the car will also be accelerated by the fact that teams worldwide will be working on it at the same time.

From Ford:

Focus race car concept by Ford Racing makes its global debut at the 2010 Los Angeles International Auto Show

Powered by a 2.0-liter Ford EcoBoost™ turbo engine, the Focus race car concept is built to compete in global road and touring car racing

All-new Focus, Ford’s latest offering, will be raced by touring car teams globally, building on Ford’s history in engineering race-ready platforms. First race appearance for the car is anticipated to be in the 2011 British Touring Car Championship

Focus race car concept hints at future potential as Ford coordinates with and provides technical support to private race teams around the world to develop one common race car capable of winning major touring car categories

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 17, 2010 – Ford Motor Company is putting racing on the map at the 2010 Los Angeles International Auto Show with the debut of the Focus race car concept, demonstrating future potential for the all-new 2012 Ford Focus to compete in road and touring car championships with teams around the world.

The Focus race car concept is a dramatic example of Ford’s global approach to product development and builds on the company’s comprehensive approach to leveraging its global product platforms.

This race car concept, powered by the sophisticated 2.0-liter Ford EcoBoost I-4 engine, is the first to benefit from a collaborative effort between Ford and race teams around the world that have already built and raced successful Focus race cars. The Focus race car concept has been based around rules governing circuit racing in the United States and beyond.

“This teamwork has resulted in a global racing platform using a common Focus body and a safety cage built to FIA regulations – a competitive platform that can be tailored for regional competition, based on different rules,” said Jost Capito, director of Global Performance Vehicles and Motorsport Business Development. “By leveraging our collective experience and Ford technology worldwide, this approach parallels our global dedication to the Focus production car and specifically its exciting performance derivative, the new Focus ST, to deliver a competitive race car that can be campaigned around the world.”

Using the all-new Focus as its base, the Focus race car concept features AST performance coil-over adjustable dampers, Ford Racing upgraded sway bars with adjustable end links and front brakes with 320-millimeter two-piece rotors and race pads. The Anthracite 18-inch wheels and Hoosier race tires put the finishing touches on the exterior.

In addition to the FIA Super 2000 regulations roll cage, interior components include a Recaro® racing seat, AIM MXL Pista data system and AIM SmartyCam. Ford Racing fire suppression system and Ford Racing six-point safety harness round out the modifications that bring the car from street-spec to race-ready.

“There has been tremendous interest from the racing world in the new Focus, and it’s the perfect fit for a global touring car,” said Capito. “Even more, by working with professional private race teams, we’re ensuring Focus has the support it needs to compete and win around the world.”

Benefits will stretch beyond the track
Professional private race teams are partnering with Ford to develop common technical specifications for the race car, which will conform to FIA Super 2000 regulations with potential to adopt to other regulations.

The teams are being brought together by Ford to harness their strengths and define roles for the development of the race car. Ford will also support the race teams by providing data, advanced engineering tools, state-of-the-art testing facilities and production parts, resulting in teams racing more competitive cars that are developed with greater efficiency.

“Ford’s commitment to using motorsports to influence high-performance vehicles will be highly evident, as the development of the Focus touring car will also provide valuable input as we develop the upcoming Focus ST production car,” said Capito. “It’s very similar to how the Mustang team was able to apply learnings from the Ford Racing Boss 302R to the 2012 Mustang Boss 302.”

The first race appearance for the Focus is targeted for the 2011 British Touring Car Championship. Globally, the race car has the potential to run in many national and regional championships, such as the China Touring Car Championship and 24-hour endurance races like the classic Nürburgring in Germany.

New global Focus has it all
The new Focus is the result of a global product development program bringing together Ford’s best engineers and technology from around the world. The new Focus will be sold in 122 markets worldwide and manufactured in Ford plants in Asia, Europe and North America.

All Focus models sold in North America will be powered by Ford’s most advanced naturally aspirated engine ever: a new, 2.0-liter gasoline engine equipped with direct injection and twin independent variable camshaft timing – two important fuel-saving technologies. A six-speed PowerShift automatic transmission will be offered.

A Focus ST version also will be available, boasting exhilarating performance and an addictive sound. Ford’s first global high-performance model, scheduled for 2012 launch and developed by Ford’s global performance vehicles team, will deliver a 2.0-liter EcoBoost I-4 engine, lowered chassis, high-performance brakes and unique suspension tuning. The standard transmission for Focus ST is a six-speed manual, optimized with sporting ratios matched to the performance characteristics of the engine.

Ford’s North American engineering team is targeting fuel economy of 40 mpg highway for the most efficient Focus model, equipped with an automatic transmission. The new Focus will also offer North American consumers a full suite of Ford technology – including Ford SYNC®, MyFord Touch™, in-car Wi-Fi capability, active park assist and rear view camera.

Porsche’s most powerful and expensive 911 models usually capture the limelight; cars such as the 911 GT2 RS, Turbo, and GT3. But in the real world, even Porsche owners have to watch their wallets.

Visit any number of Porsche tuning shop and you’ll see more Boxsters and Caymans getting aftermarket goodies than 911 Turbos. In club racing, the Spec Boxster and 944 Spec fields are larger than any assortment of GT3 Cup cars. Gearheds enjoy Porsche technology and cars but often find that they’d rather be tuning a cheaper Cayman model than barely driving their Turbo S.

Porsche Cayman R at LA Auto Show

Porsche recently added to the fire with the debut of the Cayman R at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Even more sports oriented than the Cayman S model, the rear-wheel drive Cayman R is Porsche’s most hardcore mid-engine model.

With a 3.4-liter inline-six engine behind the driver, the Cayman R produces 330hp (10hp more than the Cayman S) and can reportedly do 0-62mph in 5-seconds flat. The Cayman R comes with a six-speed transmission and an optional seven-speed dual-clutch PDK transmission. Both versions are rear-wheel drive.

Although the slight 10hp difference doesn’t seem tomake up for the Cayman R’s $66,000 MSRP, Porsche claims that the engine differnece is about more than just power, with a lighter rotating assembly and revised ECU control allowing for faster revs.

Helping with acceleration as well is the reduction of about 120 lbs of weight. This was accomplished by removing the air conditioning, radio, instrument cluster cover, cupholder, using aluminum doors, and different door panels. The Cayman R also comes with GT3 RS-esque door handle straps.

10hp+ and 120 lbs lighter than the Cayman S

The Cayman R also has different body work, a 20mm reduction in ride height, and lightweight 19-inch wheels. A lithium-ion lightweight battery is an option.

We don’t expect too many people to plunk down extra cash to get less options out of their Cayman purchase but the R is an interesting factory concept. For those original OEM purists and collectors, it’s an attractive buy. For others, we bet they’re just eyeing which Cayman R parts to add to their standard models.

From Porsche:

The Porsche alphabet reserves the letter R for very special sports cars: R for responsive and refined – but most especially for racy. The new Cayman R combines all these attributes without compromise. The mid-engine Coupé is lighter and more powerful than the Cayman S and therefore quicker and more efficient, and is designed purely for driving dynamics. With its specially adapted sports chassis, it provides an even more precise driving experience than the Cayman S.

Cayman R 3.4-litre six-cylinder engine with 330 hp (243 kW);rear wheel drive; six-gear manual transmission, optional seven-gear Porsche double-clutch transmission (PDK);acceleration 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.0 seconds, 4.9 seconds with PDK; top speed 282 km/h (175 mph), 280 km/h (174 mph) with PDK; fuel consumption (NEDC) 9.7 l/100 km (3.43 gallons imp. per 100 miles), 9.3 l/100 km (3.29 gallons imp. per 100 miles) with PDK.

The main aim during the design of the Cayman R was to improve the two-seater even further in its performance, driving dynamics and agility through consistent weight reduction. Overall, the vehicle weight of the Cayman R was reduced by 55 kilograms to a DIN empty weight of 1295 kilograms compared with the Cayman S. This means that the Porsche engineers were able to reduce the power-to-weight ratio of the Coupé with standard manual transmission to 3.9 kilograms per horsepower, and the PDK version has 4.0 kilograms per horsepower.

The largest savings were achieved through the use of lightweight components and doing without convenience fittings. For example, the series version is not fitted with an air conditioning system or radio, which results in 15 kilograms less vehicle weight. On the bodywork side, a further 15 kilograms was saved through the use of aluminium doors as used in the 911 Turbo. Light sports bucket seats do not just improve the driver’s side support in bends, but they also contribute to a further weight reduction with a saving of around 12 kilograms compared with the conventional seats used in the Cayman S. The reduced door trim without storage compartment and with door opening strap, dispensing with the instrument cluster cover and the cupholder in addition to a wide range of minor measures round off the lightweight package.

As for the 911 GT3/GT3 RS and Boxster Spyder, an optional lithium-ion lightweight construction battery is also available. In addition, the top model in the mid-engine Coupé is equipped with the lightest 19 inch wheels the entire Porsche program can offer. The 10 spokes are so finely designed – but still extremely robust – that the complete rim set only weighs 40 kilograms.

The Cayman R’s purpose and purist character can be seen at first glance. The extended silhouette of the bodywork, which has been lowered by 20 millimetres compared to the Cayman S, combined with the distinctive fixed rear spoiler, the high-quality silver-painted wheels and numerous sporting emphases in both the interior and exterior ensures an individual appearance. The exterior mirrors together with the “PORSCHE” lettering on the side, the lateral air intakes and the rear spoiler top section – in contrasting black or silver, depending on external colour –, in addition to the black-framed headlights take design cues from the classical Porsche racing cars.

Precisely this “PORSCHE” lettering was the trademark of the first Porsche with the “R” designation, the 911 R of 1967. It was created for racing sport use in a small series of 19 cars for a small circle of top private drivers and, of course, for the company itself. The “R” was a prototype based on the series Coupé with a 210 horsepower Carrera 6 engine and, thanks to its many plastic components and extremely sparse fittings, weighed only 830 kilograms. The 911 R demonstrated its stability and speed on the 84-hour “Marathon de la Route” on the Nürburgring in 1967, where Porsche used the race as a welcome endurance test for a new series component: Vic Elford, Hans Herrmann and Jochen Neerpasch won in a 911 R fitted with the new Sportomatic transmission. The successes cumulated. Entered by the factory, the 911 R was also a winner during the “Tour de France” driven by Gérard Larrousse in 1969.

The 2010 LA Auto Show held more than fity world, North American, and concept car debuts, showcasing cars from just about every major brand except for Ferrari and Lamborghini.

By Joey Leh, Photography by Aaron Kupferman – Motorsportlens.com

Regarded in past years as one of the weaker auto shows on the global circuit, Los Angeles has turned its reputation in recent years. The 2010 LA Auto Show held more than fity world, North American, and concept car debuts, showcasing cars from just about every major brand except for Ferrari and Lamborghini.

Turbo Ford Focus ST

With a large footprint and no real centralized area of urban living, Los Angeles has always been a car city before a mass transportation city. Instead of a snaking, interlocking subway system, ala London or New York, Los Angeles has wide freeways, twisting roads, and lots of traffic. Lots of traffic – ask anybody who’s taken the 405 freeway in the afternoon.

So it comes as good news for Angelinos, who often consider their car their second home, that their own auto show has grown this year. Our pick of the show as far as debuts is the Lotus Elite Concept, which saw its North American debut. The Elite is a sleek two-door prototype that mixed well with Lotus’ gaggle of other concepts cars, showcasing what kind of larger, more powerful coupe they have in store for the future.

The Subaru Impreza Concept saw its world debut and displayed Subaru’s new direction of more – more angles, more fins, and more room. It’ll change quite a bit before it debuts as the next Impreza body type but we still prefer the white Nurburgring record WRX STI sedan that they had on display.

HPD's Honda CR-Z Hybrid R

One of the most impressive press conferences during the two press days belonged to Porsche. With three cars to show off and two to debut to North America, Porsche went with an in-depth display inside of their tranditional home in Petree Hall. With multiple models and car covers representing decades of history, Porsche went multi-media to unwrap the Cayman R, 911 Carrera GTS, and 911 Speedster. The Cayman R is a stripped down, more expensive version of the Cayman, packing 10hp more and 120 lbs less thanks to carbon fiber seats and the removal of some accessories.

The 2012 Nissan GT-R was unwrapped with 530hp, carbon fiber interior trim, new wheels, revised bumpers, and the addition of a new Black Edition. Even though the GT-R is already one of the most buzz-worthy models on the sports car market, it’s good to see Nissan continue to push forward with their line-up.

But, being the poor bastards that we are, we were more interested in a tiny Italian commuter than the mighty GT-R. Fiat’s North American debut of the 500 Cinquecento was admittedly pretty mild as far as debut conferences go but the car itself is a sharply designed, small, light commuter for around $15k. Most importantly, we hear that the debut will lead to the US debut of the Fiat 500 Abarth, a 170hp turbocharged Mini Cooper S killer that has some serious credo in Europe.

By OR Staff, Photography courtesy of manufacturers

We’ve all heard the rumors about the golf cart-sized, dirt cheap car being developed in a secret Indian laboratory and have daydreamed about pancaking a Smart Car in slow traffic. But these tiny cars all have some things going for them – they’re cheap and fuel efficient.

Now, on the flip side, a motorcycle is also cheap and fuel efficient. And walking on two feet even more so. But not everybody wants to balance on two wheels and even a Smart Car is more comfortable than walking through humid New York sidewalk congestion.

So companies constantly develop and dream, hoping to give birth to the lightweight concept of tomorrow that will keep the current generation of Camrys and Accords from growing heavier and larger.

The latest crop is a series of 1,000lb concept cars whipped up for the Los Angeles Auto Show Design Challenge. The premise was to create a 1,000lb car that is both comfortable and safe, while still delivering driving performance. The entrants include GM, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Mazda, Maybach, Nissan, Smart, Toyota, and Volvo.

1. General Motors / Cadillac Aera

The largest car of the bunch, the Aera is a 2+2 powered by compressed air. It’s air storage tank gives it a 1,000 mile driving range.

2. Honda Air

Part roller coaster and part skydiving suit, the Air is powered by compressed air and a pneumatic regulator system. In typical Honda fashion, the car is light, undercutting the design at 800lb.

3. Maybach DRS

It seems odd that a company of such dollar excess as Maybach would make a stripped down eco-car of the future but the DRS is full of contradiction. Standing for Den-Riki-Sha, “electric rickshaw”, the DRS is a Japanese-inspired electric pod supposedly designed and sold by a ultra-luxury German auto brand. Um, ok.

4. Mazda MX-0

The MX-5 Miata of the future, the MX-0 is basically the electric roadster of the future, with all of its body panels and weight stripped away.

5. Mercedes-Benz Biome

Powered by the sun, the Biome can be composted and is powered by BioNectar 4534, which comes from solar energy and from energy collected from specially retrofitted trees.

6. Nissan iV

Having already produced a mass-market electric and turbocharged mini-SUV, Nissan is all about new ideas. The iV comes out of the year 2035 and is grown out of ivy and spider silk composite. In-wheel magnetic motors provide acceleration and steering.

7. Smart 454 WWT

Combining German efficiency with a strangely West Coast Customs-lite hipster cool, the Smart 454 WWT is a modular carbon fiber pod made of recycled plastics.

8. Toyota NORI

Built by Calty Design Research, Inc, the electric NORI is skinned in a bioplastic consisting of carbon fiber, solar cells, and seaweed. We’re not kidding either, nori is Japanese for seaweed and the concept calls for the chassis to be grown at seaside factories.

9. Volvo Air Motion

Volvo’s concept uses a formula racing car body and compressed air motors instead of a regular gasoline engine, with a centrally located air tank. The tank is refilled by imaginary “air replenishment sites”, which are air turbines hanging 1,000ft in the air.

With even Ferrari going the hybrid route, many new electric and combination vehicles were on display. Nissan showcased their Leaf all-electric zero emissions cars

By Stephen Oyoung, Photography by Joey Leh

Even though the glory days of car sales and financing have taken a backseat to closures and cutbacks, many OEMS displayed at the NYIAS with the standard extravagant booths and new releases. And if the New York International Autoshow (NYIAS) was any indication, auto manufacturers only have two things on their minds right now – hybrids and racecars.

With even Ferrari going the hybrid route, many new electric and combination vehicles were on display. Nissan showcased their Leaf all-electric zero emissions cars, which was ironically parked just nearby the fuel-swilling, horsepower-rich GT-R. Lexus created a multi-video display-equipped rotating stand, which held its CT200h premium compact hybrid.

Flanked by a high-production video starring The Boondock Saints’ Norman Reedus, the CT200h was reaching out to the young, successful urban business types that surely thrive in New York’s bursting financial and business sectors. That is, if the constant casting in TV shows is to be believed.

With Mercedes-Benz displaying its insane 600hp+ SLS AMG GT3 racecar, we had to turn to respectable ‘ole Chevy to find the next green car. The 2011 Chevy Volt is an all-electric car that they claim will do up to 40 miles a day without any gas. Zero emissions indeed but that range leaves something to be desired. For many Los Angeles residents, driving 40 miles won’t even get you to the bus station.

Chevy did have its more conventional Cruze on display, which is their standard passenger car sedan. The Cruze is the type of car that rental fleets make you ponder versus a Pontiac G6 but they did have one ace up their sleeves. A World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) Chevy Cruze was on display, which was ironic since the series doesn’t race in the US and the Cruze is probably not going to be raced at all in the US by Chevy.

Although not a hybrid, Mazda announced final pricing on its tiny Mazda2. For under $14k buyers can get themselves into the tiny fuel-sipping commuter. Maybe Mazda will start a Spec Mazda2 racing series? Akin to Mazda’s Scion-hunter, the Mazda2 was flanked by plexiglass-enclosed displays with Mazda’s new turbodiesel engine. We’ve always been fans here at OR for clean turbodiesel power.

With more and more diesel stations popping up, it seems to make perfect sense to use turbodiesel engines, which deliver high fuel economy and can be boosted to insane levels without worrying about detonation. We’d love to see Mazda go a totally different direction with the RX-8 and produce a turbodiesel version, which makes 350lb/ft of instant torque.

Outside, the SLS AMG GT3 has been fit with a variety of new sculpted and lightweight carbon fiber body panels. The front end has been redesigned for better ducting and functions with a massive carbon front splitter.

Taking the already potent 563hp gull-wing SLS AMG and turning up the wick, Mercedes-Benz has created the SLS AMG GT3 racecar. The “GT3” in the name comes from the racecar’s preparation for the FIA GT3 racing class.

We expect the car to run in endurance races and in the FIA GT3 European Championship, where the main competition is the Aston Martin DBRS9, Audi R8 LMS, BMW Alpina B6 GT3, Dodge Viper Competition Coupe, Ferrari F430 Scuderia and Ford GT. The special racing car is set to make its debut on track in 2011.

Mercedes-Benz claims that the engine is nearly the same AMG-prep as the production SLS AMG. This means a 6.3-liter dry sump-equipped V8 engine, although an open exhaust helps push the GT3 version past the 600hp mark. A 0-60mph time of 3.7-seconds and an 186mph+ top speed are claimed.

The SLS AMG GT3 is also equipped with a sequential six-speed transmission and carbon fiber driveshaft. Nothing less would be adequate for a racing car that uses a factory rollcage, massive braking system, centerlock hubs and racing slicks.

Outside, the SLS AMG GT3 has been fit with a variety of new sculpted and lightweight carbon fiber body panels. The front end has been redesigned for better ducting and functions with a massive carbon front splitter. The rear wing is just about one of the biggest you’ll ever see and a completely flat carbon undertray covers the underbody of the car. No factory efforts or privateer entries were announced at the time of the SLS AMG GT3’s release but we expect to see this car on track testing within the year.

It’s combination of price, design, customization, capability and performance ensured its place in college parking lots across the US. But, six years down the line, Scion had to do something to reinvent its sporty flagship.

By Joey Leh, Photograph courtesy Scion

Scion had little reason to muck with the tC for its second-generation design. As the brand’s top seller, the tC was already a hit among young, often first-time buyers. It’s combination of price, design, customization, capability and performance ensured its place in college parking lots across the US. But, six years down the line, Scion had to do something to reinvent its sporty flagship.

To all the OR readers who were hoping for rear-wheel drive or turbocharged/V6 power – sorry, not gonna happen. Keep your fingers crossed for the FT-86 instead. What the new 2nd-generation 2011 Scion tC does have is enough improvements to make it a stronger, better version of the original tC.

Using an all-new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with dual VVT-i, the tC now puts out 180hp and 173 lb/ft of torque to the front wheels. That’s an improvement of 19hp and 11 lb/ft of torque over the old tC. Replacing the old five-speed transmission is a new six-speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic with “sequential shift”.

Not to be confused with a true sequential gearbox or dual-clutch system, the tC comes a conventional automatic that allows the driver to manually select gears.

The 2011 tC also comes with a new chassis design, featuring a conventional MacPherson strut front but a double-wishbone rear suspension design. Ride height is also lowered when compared with the first tC. Larger 18-inch alloy wheels are now standard, bigger to wrap around huge 16-inch disc brakes. Yes, those are incredibly massive brakes and yes, that’s a good thing.

The tC comes equipped with all the standard driver’s aids including anti-lock brakes, vehicle stability control, traction control, brake force distribution and braking assist. When factoring these electronics in with the new suspension, brakes, wheels, transmission and power increase, it’s obvious that Scion had performance on its mind with the new tC.

The look and feel of the 2011 tC even gives off an aura of speed. The new three-spoke steering wheel features a new shape and flat bottom, growing closer in tactile feel to that of a racing wheel. The new seats are supportive and grippy while the center console wraps inward to surround the driver.

The exterior of the car is also much more striking, with a sharper-edged and more aggressive appearance that seems to combine elements of the Chevy Camaro with the Scion FUSE concept car shown a few years ago. With its lower ride height, larger wheels and sharper face, the Scion tC has dumped any notion of a conservative past in favor of a more mean look.

Either way, after seeing the striking Five Axis customized 2011 tC, we were sold on its looks. We followed along with the Five Axis team as they finished up the car and debuted it at the 2010 New York Auto Show. With even bigger fender flares, a larger front airdam and sculpted side skirts, the Five Axis tC takes the standard Scion re-design and runs wild with it.

The customized showcar is all gruff and growl, with a muscled look that would fit a 800hp monster. Five Axis didn’t quite give it that much kick under the hood but we hope to see this kit for sale soon and fit to some future racing tCs.

The tiny, fuel-efficient Smart car has proven that metropolitan American buyers do want to drive a quirky, small commuter car. We should know. The OR team was almost run down by two separate crazed Smart drivers just outside New York’s Jacob Javits Convention Center.

And now Scion has entered the fray with this car – the new 2011 iQ. We’ve seen it before in the green Five Axis iQ concept and the iQ is currently sold in Japan and Europe. But now we can lay our eyes on our own US production iQ subcompact. It’s a “sub”-compact because the tiny iQ is only 120.1-inches long and 66.1-inches wide.

It’s a tiny car in person but still gives off a larger feel than a Smart car.

The iQ is powered by a 1.3-liter dual VVT-i four-cylinder engine, producing over 90hp. Combined with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), the iQ is designed more for commuting than drag racing. Still, the iQ comes with stability control, anti-lock brakes, brake assist and traction control.

We’ve always been of the mindset that having decent tires and less than 160hp is its own kind of traction control but, then again, our videos can prove otherwise.

The iQ uses an interesting, offset “3+1” seating arrangement to fit three adults and one child inside the little Scion. The front seats are slightly off, allowing more room for the rear passenger. If only airlines could figure out something like this.

Scion has also managed to pack ten airbags, six speakers, iPod control and steering wheel-mounted stereo controls into the iQ. At the debut, Scion also revealed a customized version of the iQ from design house Five Axis, fit with a custom aero kit, 18-in. FIVE:AD wheels, Yokohama tires, TEIN suspension, TRD brake kit and a custom interior.

With its quirky, tiny and egg-shaped body, the Scion iQ looks like it’ll finally do what the Smart car couldn’t. Bring tiny car cool to the masses. It’s so cheap, oddly striking in appearance and highly customizable, we can’t help but be reminded of the original Scion launch days. That’s cool.

Still refusing to beg for handouts, Ford put on a big show with a large showcase displaying their new Focus, Fiesta and updated Mustang line-up. A presentation with Microsoft showcased Ford’s new Hohm software, which will allow drivers to manage the recharging at home of their electric car. Ford announced five new electric cars by 2013, including the Transit Connect van and Focus Electric.

Balancing out that “green” is Ford’s revised 2011 Mustang. The big news for the ‘Stang is the revised engine line-up, which now includes a Camaro-busting 3.7-liter DOHC V6 that makes 305hp and a 5.0-liter V8 for the GT that makes 412hp. Both run on 87-octane fuel and Ford claims the V6 can get up to 30mpg on the highway.

The Ford Shelby GT500 gets the 5.4-liter all-aluminum V8 out of the Ford GT, although it’s now supercharged to the tune of 550hp. It still gets 23mpg on the highway. Say what you will about the Mustang’s interior quality and ergonomics; these are impressive powerplants for the price. We can see a lot of people having a lot of fun doing burnouts in rentals.

At the 2010 New York Auto Show, Subaru unveiled the 2011 Impreza WRX. Redesigned for the new model year, the WRX now wears the signature widebody fender flares of its big brother, the WRX STI. The front and rear track has been increased by about 1.5-inches and the tire size has rightfully gone up from 225/45/17 to 235/45/17. The WRX’s wheels have also increased by 1-inch in width to 17×8-inches.

“The new wide-body designs mark another major step on the continuous evolution of the WRX to give driving enthusiasts an even more compelling all-wheel drive performance package,” said Tom Doll, executive vice president and COO of Subaru of America, Inc.

The Subaru WRX continues on with the same 265hp and 244 lb-ft of torque 2.5-liter flat-four engine that has powered it since 2009, teamed with a 5-speed manual transmission. Stiffer rear subrame bushings have also been added out back, although the rest of the suspension remains the same as in 2010.

The big news for the new model year is the widened body, which was designed by Subaru for looks as well as functionality. Although the factory has only increased tire width by 10mm, we bet that a minor fender trim or roll will allow the use of a better offset, increasing the amount of tire that can be fit. We wouldn’t be surprised if the first batch of 2011 WRX owners find ways to easily bolt on 245 or 255-width tires.

Subaru claims that the new body weighs only 33-lbs more than the “standard” body design. As before, the Impreza WRX will be available in both a four-door sedan and five-door hatchback version.

It’s official, the Subaru Impreza WRX STI is back in winged, 4-door sedan form. After a few years of availability solely in 5-door hatchback form, the WRX STI can be had in the 2011 model year in either 4-door sedan form or 5-door hatchback form. This is the first time ever that Subaru has sold its iconic STI model in two body shapes.

With the redesigned 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX receiving a factory widebody and bigger tires, the STI model needed a few upgrades to retain its “king of the hill” status.

“The continuous evolution and development of the WRX STI is driven by the strong, loyal and vocal support from thousands of enthusiastic owners of this exciting high-performance vehicle,” said Tom Doll, executive vice president and COO of Subaru of America, Inc. “The 2011 4-door WRX STI will expand the appeal of this iconic performance model to a wider range of driving enthusiasts.”

The 5-door STI remains largely the same in terms of its widebody. The new 4-door STI bears a striking resemblance to the widened WRX sedan, with its bulging rear flares and wider fenders. Both STI models feature a sharpened front bumper, lip spoiler and redesigned front grille.

The STI sedan, with its flat trunk, wears a large rear spoiler, with styling very reminiscent of the old Impreza STI coupes. Subaru states that the rear wing contributes to “zero lift” on the new STI sedan, although they don’t state whether that is front, rear or overall.

The suspension system on the STI has also been reworked with a lower ride height and tighter handling. New pillowball bushings, i.e. spherical bearings, in the front and stiffer rear subframe bushings are used. The spring rates have gone up by 15.6% in the front and 53% in the rear, although actual rates were not printed. Swaybars have gone up in thickness as well, by 1mm front and rear to 21mm front and 19mm rear.

The standard 18-inch aluminum wheels are lighter than before, shaving off 17.6-lbs total of unsprung weight. 18×8.5-inch BBS forged wheels are optional and even lighter.

The engine remains the same as 2010, a 2.5-liter flat-four engine that’s turbocharged to the tune of 305hp and 290 lb/ft of torque. As before, the STI distances itself from the Impreza WRX model with the addition of a six-speed transmission with a Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD), SI-Drive (ECU mapping and e-throttle control), Brembo brakes and a different STI-branded interior.

Just when we were getting used to the idea of a 5-door rally STI, Subaru unleashes the new 2011 4-door sedan option. Like previous STIs, it retains an angry, hopped-up edge with its body cladding and aggressive wing. When’s the coupe coming out?

The AE86 mantra is living on in the Toyota FT-86. Similar to the old Corolla, the upcoming FT-86 promises cheap, lightweight, rear-wheel drive performance.

Built in conjunction with Subaru, the FT-86 had many people hoping for a turbocharged, RWD platform. Well, the FT-86 isn’t going to be factory turbocharged.

But don’t give up hope. At the 2010 Tokyo Auto Salon car show, Toyota debuted the FT-86 G Sports Concept, pointing towards the production FT-86 G Sports. Toyota announced that it would be selling factory tuned versions of certain cars, each carrying the G Sports name so buyers can be sure of what they’re buying.

There are rumors flying around that the FT-86 G Sports will come with a 2.0-liter turbocharged Subaru engine and will remain rear-wheel drive. The G Sports models will be sold this year in Japan but no announcement has been made about a US release.

The car is striking in images, with a resemblance similar to the Nissan 370Z. The concept car is clad in carbon fiber and sports some obviously non-production wheels but the shape is close to final. We can’twait to see what the production FT-86 will look like when it arrives in the US and what will come under the hood.

From the IS-F to the LFA, we’re glad to see Toyota pay attention to performance. Look out Hyundai and Nissan, a new rear-wheel drive player may soon be showing up.

Kia’s been re-inventing itself as of late. Borrowing cool kid cues from Scion and Honda, Kia has been designing and marketing some of its latest offerings as edgy, hip and cool. Did you see the hamsters driving down the road on TV?

Their latest offering is this, the Forte Koup. Looks like a Civic coupe up front and a Civic/Lancer combo out back. Not the most original design but it looks good. The SX model comes with a 2.4-liter pushing 173hp and 168lb/ft of torque and a six-speed manual. MPG is rated at a 22/32. The vast difference between city and highway has us thinking incredibly tall sixth gear. Still, it has more power than a tC and more torque than a Civic Si. Could be a good city cruiser. We’ll see soon enough.

Kia release:

KIA MOTORS AMERICA INTRODUCES FORTE KOUP AT 2009 NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW

With performance-inspired, aggressive and sleek styling, Kia Motors America (KMA) today globally debuted the 2010 Forte Koup production vehicle during a press conference at the 2009 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS). Joining the Forte family in the KMA lineup, the company’s first-ever two-door coupe embodies the brand’s current bold design direction first seen on the concept version of the Soul urban passenger vehicle in 2006.

“On the heel of the introductions of the Soul and Forte sedan, Forte Koup represents the next exciting step in the transformation of Kia design and offers a blend of sporty and emotional appeal,” said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing, KMA. “We believe our new design evolution coupled with standard Kia value and safety features will continue to attract customers to the Kia brand.”

Curb Appeal

Based on the design styling of the KOUP concept vehicle shown during last year’s show, Forte Koup’s fluid lines and balanced proportions, meant to evoke an emotional driving experience, closely mirror the powerful design cues of the concept vehicle and offer the same aggressive stance with swept-back wrap-around headlamps, aggressive air intakes and a low, sleek profile. Available in two trim levels (EX and SX), Forte Koup offers a muscular yet sophisticated design. Even from behind, Forte Koup exudes attitude with slim, wrapped tail lights, duel exhaust outlets and a rear diffuser.

Athleticism and convenience are standard for the Forte Koup EX with body-color bumpers, power heated outside mirrors with integrated turn signals and 16-inch alloy wheels outfitted with P205/55R16 tires. The SX trim offers an even sportier profile with 17-inch alloy wheels paired with P215/45R17-sized premium tires.

Smooth and Sporty Ride

With a wheelbase of 104.3 inches, an overall length of 176.4 inches, an overall width of 69.5 inches and overall height of 55.1 inches, Forte Koup is slightly shorter in length and height than the Forte sedan, but still boasts comfortable seating for up to five passengers. Koup’s lowered stance provides better aerodynamics for those looking for a more exciting ride.

The Kia-engineered body achieves high torsional stiffness giving Forte Koup better handling, smoother ride quality and greater refinement than its competitors, with a specially tuned suspension developed to optimize responsive handling on curvy roads. Additional refinements are fitted throughout to help ensure a comfortable ride with good noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) reduction qualities.

Built on a front-wheel-drive unibody frame, Forte Koup utilizes the same platform as the sedan, with an independent front suspension with MacPherson struts and stabilizer bar and a torsion beam rear suspension with struts and coil springs. This combination helps provide the optimal balance of handling and comfort. An engine-speed-sensitive, power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering system adds the finishing touch for precise handling to help provide the most advantageous amount of assist for varying road conditions. The SX trim also comes with a sport-tuned suspension providing for a firmer ride with reduced body roll and improved handling.

Lively Performance

More powerful than the Honda Civic Coupe, Ford Focus Coupe or Chevrolet Cobalt Coupe, Forte Koup EX is driven by a 2.0-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine, producing 156 horsepower and 144 pound-feet of torque that features Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) and multi-port electronic fuel injection, both of which provide for greater performance and fuel economy. The SX features an upgraded 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine, also with CVVT, which delivers 173 horsepower and 168 pound-feet of torque, more than the Scion tC. Expanding upon the dynamic look and feel, Forte Koup’s engine hums powerfully courtesy of the dual exhaust outlets outfitted on both EX and SX trims.

Like the Forte sedan, two transmission options are available for both 2010 Forte Koup models: a standard five-speed manual transmission or an optional electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission (EX models). The SX model features a standard six-speed manual transmission and an optional five-speed automatic transmission with Sportmatic®.

Forte Koup fuel economy is not sacrificed for sportiness, as both engines deliver at least 31 miles per gallon (highway). The 2.0-liter engine offers 25/34 mpg (city/highway) when mated with either the five-speed manual transmission or the optional four-speed automatic. Those opting for the more powerful 2.4-liter engine also can expect an economical 22/32 mpg with the six-speed manual and 23/31 when paired with the five-speed automatic transmission.

Striking Interior

With a surprisingly spacious interior for a two-door coupe, Forte Koup provides a comfortable 90.7 cubic feet of interior volume, larger than the 2009 Honda Civic Coupe, Scion tC or Chevrolet Cobalt Coupe. Driver and passengers have an impressive 38.7 inches of headroom and 43.6 inches of legroom in the front seats and 35.3 inches of headroom and 33.9 inches of legroom in the rear seats. Trips to the beach and weekend getaways will be a breeze with ample cargo space of 12.6 cubic feet, enough to accommodate luggage and belongings of all passengers.

Forte Koup continues the luxury treatment with a host of standard interior features, beginning with supportive, nicely appointed sport seats outfitted with more aggressive bolsters on the seat cushion and seat back for optimal comfort. Air conditioning, a driver’s seat height adjuster, adjustable rear seat headrests, tilt steering column, rear defroster, center console with dual cup holders, map lamps and variable intermittent wipers are also just some of the myriad amenities standard on every vehicle. Also standard on all models are power windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry and cruise control with steering wheel-mounted controls for added convenience.

Progressing to the SX trim offers additional standard touches such as: unique sport cloth seats with vibrant red stitching, a tilt and telescoping steering column, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, metal pedals and metal finish trim and a Supervision™ gauge cluster with trip computer further enhancing its energetic personality. Both EX and SX trims also offer an optional power moonroof.

An optional Leather Package is available for both EX and SX trims. When combined with the EX trim the Leather Package adds leather seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob and heated seats. When paired with the SX trim it includes leather and heated seats in addition to the standard leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.

The new 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG debuts at the New York show with 518hp out of its 6.2-liter V8. Other big news for the super sedan includes the replacement of the automatic transmission with torque converter. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is now on board, with four selectable driving modes.

Mercedes-Benz release on the car:

THE E63 AMG – A NEW-GENERATION SPORTS SEDAN DELIVERING TOP DRIVING DYNAMICS

Affalterbach, Germany – AMG is kicking-off the 2009 driving season with a new superstar: shortly after the launch of the new E-Class, the AMG high-performance brand of Mercedes-Benz Cars presents the new 2010 E63 AMG. This dynamic sports sedan impresses with outstanding performance, thrilling handling characteristics and advanced technology transferred from its sibling, the SL63 AMG high-performance Roadster. The E63 AMG makes its U.S. sales debut in November 2009.

The new E63 AMG distinguishes itself from the standard Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedans with a newly developed AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with electronically controlled damping, revised front suspension and unique exterior and interior design. At the same time, Mercedes-AMG has achieved a significant reduction in fuel consumption of almost twelve percent for the new E63 AMG, thanks to the precise application of several fuel efficiency improvements. With its unique combination of pioneering driver assistance systems, the E63 AMG further consolidates the brand’s leading position in the field of automotive safety.

The AMG 6.2-liter V8-engine in the new E63 AMG develops an output of 518 hp and a 465 lb-ft of torque, matching the outstanding figures for the SL63 AMG. The high-performance Roadster has also transferred its AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission to the new model. This transmission replaces the conventional torque converter through the use of a multi-disc wet start-up clutch. In conjunction with the four individual driving modes, rev-matched shifts and RACE START function, the resulting, direct connection to the powertrain delivers an extremely emotional and high-performance driving experience.

The AMG MCT drive unit is unique in this segment, and provides dramatic performance figures: the E63 AMG accelerates from standstill to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds, with a top speed of 155 mph (electronically limited). The fast-revving, naturally aspirated engine with a displacement of 6208 cc impresses with its agile responsiveness, muscular power delivery and high redline. The AMG V8 sound is a thrilling partner for mile after mile, while the smooth-running engine guarantees renowned Mercedes long-distance comfort. A newly designed water cooling system ensures maximum endurance even under the enormous dynamic stresses of the racetrack.

Fuel consumption cut by almost twelve percent

Despite 11 hp of additional output versus the preceding model, the E63 AMG showcases several advancements designed to improve fuel efficiency, including on-demand delivery of fuel and alternator management with recuperation of engine power during overrun. In-engine friction is also reduced by the AMG-exclusive twin-wire arc spray coating process used to coat cylinder walls.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission also makes a decisive contribution to fuel economy: a multi-disc wet clutch running in an oil bath replaces the previous torque converter. This unit responds extremely rapidly, directly and without the losses typical of a torque converter transmission thanks to its low rotational inertia. The transmission is equipped with four driving modes: “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual), which can be selected using a rotary electronic switch in the AMG DRIVE UNIT. Partial suppression of individual cylinders by interrupting ignition and injection during gearshifts under full load contributes to considerably faster shift times. In M mode the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission allows gearshifts to be performed in 100 milliseconds.

Like the Nismo 350Z a couple years back, Nissan has once again applied the Nissan Motorsports (Nismo) name to the Z platform. The new Nismo 370Z is only offered one way. No options and no automatic transmission available. Sweet.

Power is up from the standard 370Z with the Nismo packing 350hp at 7400rpm and 276lb/ft of torque at 5200rpm. The power increase comes courtesy of a new exhaust system and revised ECU calibration. The standard 370Z six-speed manual remains, with the SynchroRev Match function that automatically blips the throttle for you during downshifts. It sounds like a good idea for those hamfisted drivers who cause needless drivetrain shock but for OR readers, the system can be turned off, just like in the 370Z.

Compared to the 370Z Coupe, front spring rates are up 15%, rear springs up 10%, front swaybar stiffness up 15% and rear bar up 50%. Damping has been increased by 40% front and 140% rear. With that increase in rear stiffness, we expect the Nismo 370Z to display far less understeer than the standard Z.

Forged 19-inch RAYS wheels are standard (19×9.5, 19×10.5) with Yokohama Advan Sport tires (245/40/19 and 285/35/19). A viscous LSD is standard along with ABS and VDC stability control. Nismo Sport Brakes have been added, with 14-inch front and 13.8-inch rear rotors. Four-piston front and two-piston rear calipers are used.

The Nismo 370Z also features new bodywork which is reminiscent of the longnose 350Z. A new front nose and chin spoiler have been added along with side sills and a new rear bumper. The spoiler is functional as well. In case your passengers didn’t get the hint already, the Nismo 370Z’s interior features Nismo-branded seats, new interior fabrics and a Nismo tachometer.
