Tomei has released its latest titanium exhaust system, this time for the 2002-2007 GDB-chassis Subaru Impreza WRX and WRX STI. The exhaust carries a MSRP of $1,390 in the US and is a complete exhaust. Add in your own downpipe and you’ll have a complete turboback WRX exhaust system.

Made of titanium, the larger diameter Tomei exhaust cuts 22.93-lbs from the heavy stock exhaust, weighing in at just 11.24-lbs total. The heavy diet comes from the material choice, 3-piece pipe design (which eliminates a bit of hardware required), and loss of mid-pipe silencers. Needless to say, this system will be louder than stock; Tomei includes a removable tailpipe silencer plug for street use. The system is recommended for “off-road use” only.

For those Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X owners looking for larger intercooler to fit larger turbochargers, GReddy has answered your call. Their new Type-33F intercooler is a bolt-on front-mount kit that has 60% more core volume. It’s a tube and fin design with divided endtanks and should be a worthwhile upgrade for those with larger-than-stock turbos and higher boost levels.

From GReddy:

GReddy Performance Products, Inc. now offers its new Type-33F Upgraded Intercooler for the 2008–‐on (CZ4A) Mitsubishi Evolution X. In addition to being nearly 4” (100mm) thick and having 60% larger core volume (measuring 525×292xa00mm vs. the stock 490×290x68mm), it’s unique, divided endtanks increase efficiency and cooling. A must have for high boost EVO X applications. The combination of the larger tube and fin “inner–‐fin” technology with the larger 70mm (vs. stocks 60mm) diameter, heavy-duty, directional endtanks provide better flow and cooling over the entire core surface.

5Zigen, known for their line-up of lightweight and low-cost wheels, exhausts, and lug nuts, recently announced the addition of a new lug nut. Called the KOMA aluminum lug nut, the new nuts are based on the same lightweight aluminum pieces that are sold for track and racing use.

The difference here is the use of a special chrome coating, which should help the lug nuts appeal to show car guys and truck owners. 5Zigen says that the nuts are made out of an A7075 aluminum alloy (5Zigen calls it Geralnium), giving the nuts low weight while retaining strength.

People obsessed with looks will appreciate the machined surface, chrome shine, and knurled ends, which make it easy to grip when taking nuts on and off to clean wheels. The nuts use a standard 19mm socket for installation.

The 5Zigen KOMA lug nuts come in packs of twenty, four of which are locks, to fit many 5-lug cars. They are available in either 12mm x 1.5 or 12mm x 1.25 fitment.

It’s finally happened – Garrett has decided to advance its ever-popular line of turbochargers. One of the most famous and prolific turbocharger line-ups, in both the OEM and aftermarket world, the Garrett GT series (GT3076, GT2860, etc) has finally gotten better.

Garrett recently announced the release of its new GTX turbo series. Starting with the GTX3071R, GTX3076R, and GTX3582R, the GTX series is the same as the GT line of turbos but has been given a new forged aluminum compressor wheel. Garrett claims that the wheel delivers 10-20% more airflow in the same package size. All of the dual ball-bearing GTX turbos are the same fitment and frame size as their GT counterparts meaning a bolt-on swap upgrade for GT owners and DIY future owners and just buy simple GT-fitment flanges and brackets when making their own manifolds.

From Garrett:

The evolution of the turbocharger continues in the popular Garrett® midframe sizes with the Garrett® GTX3071R, GTX3076R and GTX3582R.

The Garrett® GTX line features all new compressor wheel aerodynamics that deliver a proven 10-20% more flow and pressure ratio than the world-standard Garrett® GT wheel of the same size. The new wheels feature an eleven-full-blade design, fully-machined from forged aluminum alloy. Each turbo is meticulously tested and balanced to deliver the durability, reliability and performance expected from Honeywell, the world’s leader in turbocharger technology.

The Garrett® GTX turbochargers are outline interchangeable with their GT counterparts for an easy upgrade for those looking for more power without completely altering their setups. Each Garrett® GTX midframe turbo features the patented Garrett® dual ball bearing cartridge for enhanced durability and reduced transient response as well as a variety of turbine housings.

Their latest release is the Lingenfelter LS3 C6 Chevy Corvette Edelbrock E-Force Supercharged Engine Package. The package will run you a slick $13,845 and will give your Vette 670bhp and 565lb/ft of torque.

By OR Staff, Photography courtesy of Lingenfelter

When other people are doing development for you, going fast isn’t cheap. An $800 DIY turbo kit sounds like a great idea on a late \’80s BMW E30 3-Series but most modern Porsche, Viper, and Corvette owners aren’t willing to go down that route with their more expensive machines. These owners are interested in fully developed, turn key power packages that are both civil and engineered. This has fueled the rise of such high-end tuning companies as Dinan and Lingenfelter.

Lingenfelter is infamous amongst the GM ranks, having built more than one Corvette that stacked up against a jet fighter. Their latest release is the Lingenfelter LS3 C6 Chevy Corvette Edelbrock E-Force Supercharged Engine Package. The package will run you a slick $13,845 and will give your Vette 670bhp and 565lb/ft of torque.

It generates this power using Edelbrock’s E-Force supercharger kit combined with Lingenfelter cylinder heads and a hotter cam. The package also includes necessary valvetrain and fuel upgrades. Installation takes a lengthy two weeks but includes all tuning as well. The cost of another, smaller car may seem like a lot to get to 670hp but you do get a warranty with this kit. For some people, that matters.

5Zigen USA recently announced the debut of its newest exhaust system for sport compact cars, called the 5ZIGEN Super Lap exhaust system. The system is a performance unit based on time attack (also known as super lap in Japan – Ed.) R&D. 5Zigen promises that the exhaust is built for power and noise tone but says nothing about noise level. Expect this to be a loud, race-ready part.

The Super Lap is designed to successfully absorb the unpleasant range of muffler noise without losing efficiency by placing the escape hole, which has a unique angle and size, in the silencer instead of using a conventional punching mechanism. Designed for all-out competition, it’s an exhaust system for racers in time attack, auto-cross, club racing, etc. All exhaust systems are made in-house in Osaka, Japan and meet JASMA standards quality.

Recaro recently announced their ProSeries line of child safety seats, supposedly “based on Recaro’s racetrack proven mobile seating technology”. We’re not sure what that means (HANS compatible? – Ed.)

By OR Staff, Photography courtesy of Recaro

Having produced some of the nicest aftermarket and factory (Evo X among others) sport seats around, Recaro is a well-known name in the performance market. What some enthusiasts don’t know is that Recaro is also a heavy producer in the child safety market.

With their history, knowledge, and design capabilities, Recaro is an obvious choice to produce a quality seat for small children. Throw in the fact that formerly manic speed junkies want their children taken care of correctly and the whole package just works.

Recaro recently announced their ProSeries line of child safety seats, supposedly “based on Recaro’s racetrack proven mobile seating technology”. We’re not sure what that means (HANS compatible? – Ed.) but we’re sure that more than a few dads will pick up the seat because of that line alone.

There are three different models, varying mostly on the size of the child and the desired occupant. The ProRide, ProSport, and ProBooster can hold children from 5lbs all the way up to 120lbs, keeping your kids in Recaro gear until they’re big enough for the real bucket seat.

From Recaro:

The new ProSERIES line includes the ProRIDE, the ProSPORT and the ProBOOSTER seats each specifically designed to deliver comfort and safety as your child grows. Each seat is now available through retailers nationwide.

“RECARO’s new ProSERIES seats are designed to not only deliver maximum protection, but the ultimate in comfort for the entire time a child is required to be in a car seat,” said Jonathan Sieber, director of Sales & Marketing for RECARO North America. “We have already received a significant amount of positive feedback from parents that appreciate not only the ProSERIES’ safety design, but its great looks and overall ease-of-use. RECARO was also able to achieve a 90-pound harness weight capacity on the ProSPORT which is the highest available in its class.”

“Every year, thousands of children are tragically injured or killed in motor vehicle crashes. In fact, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children age 3 and older in the United States. Securing your children properly in age and size appropriate child safety seats – in the back seat of your vehicle, is the most effective thing you can do to protect them in the event of a crash” according to NHTSA (the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). That is why the ProSERIES was designed as a series of seats that help protect your child as they grow.

Combined, the ProSERIES line can accommodate children from as low as 5 pounds all the way to 120 pounds. The new ProRIDE convertible seat allows parents to use the seat when their children need to face the rear and then turn it to face forward as their little one grows. The seat is designed for children from 5-70 pounds and 50 inches in height or less. The RECARO ProSPORT is a combination harness to booster car seat appropriate for children weighing between 20 and a “Best in Class” 90 pounds when used in harness mode and 30 to 120 pounds when used in booster mode. A child must also be less than 59 inches tall to use the ProSPORT. The RECARO ProBOOSTER is for children from 30 to 120 pounds and from 37 to 61 inches in height. This innovative seat has 11 head restraint positions.

Assembled in the U.S.A., the ProSERIES is a high-quality child restraint system that provides parents and children the luxury and safety they need for any trip. Parents will appreciate that each of the seats in the ProSERIES incorporates RECARO’s innovative Side Impact Protection system designed to specifically protect each of the 5 vulnerable areas of a child in a side impact collision – head, neck, face, torso and pelvis.

Each RECARO ProSERIES seat encompasses the extreme features of energy absorbing crash technology and soft wear-resistant padding . The seats are evaluated in the company’s seating competency centers in both the U.S. and Europe and through independent agencies including the globally respected ADAC. RECARO recently celebrated its 100th anniversary and was named one of the “Brands of the Century” in 2009.

RECARO ProSERIES Features

RECARO’s Side Impact Protection. Designed to protect each of the five vulnerable areas of a child in a side impact crash including their head, neck, face, torso and pelvis.

Best in Class Harness Weight. At 90 pounds the ProSPORT has the highest weight capacity available for a 5-Point harness seat.

(EPS) Energy Absorbing Foam. Expanded Polystyrene “EPS” foam absorbs crash force energy through each seat for added protection.

QuickLift: Head Restraint. Convenient lift lever allows easy positioning of the ProSPORT head restraint to properly fit your child.

CoolMesh Air Ventilation. This unique material allows for air to pass through key areas in each seat improving ventilation and air flow.

EasyAdjust: 5-Point Harness. RECARO’s harness adjusts with the head restraint. No re-threading is necessary to properly position the harness shoulder straps to a child, perfect for every day use.

QuickPull: Front Adjust Harness. Convenient frontally located harness adjuster for no hassle harness adjustment.

EasyGuide: Belt Guides. Whether in Harness or Booster mode each belt guide is color coded so you can easily identify the proper belt path and positioning of either the LATCH strap or vehicle seat belt.

Following up the release of their popular Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 4G63 bolt-on turbocharger, Tomei has announced their SR20DET bolt-on turbochargers, both priced with a MSRP of $1,390.00.

Designed to replace the Nissan rear-wheel drive SR20DET-powered 180SX and Silvia engines’ T25/T28 turbos, the Tomei ARMS M7960 and M8270 turbos come with all the piping, gaskets, fittings, lines, and hardware necessary for a direct bolt on installation.

The unit is not a direct factory bolt on replacement for transverse SR20DET Pulsar owners, although custom plumbing could make the turbo fit.

Factory and factory replacement intercoolers, intakes, and downpipes can be used to keep costs low and stealthy engine bays intact. Like the stock turbo, the Tomei units use internal wastegates.

The smaller Tomei ARMS M7960 turbo is designed for quick response, capable of producing about 400hp with max boost around 4,000rpm. The power band for this turbo is designed around low and mid-range torque and will beat the larger M8270 turbo up until 4,500rpm.

On Tomei’s test 2.2-liter S15, equipped with cams, ECU, exhaust manifold and test pipe, the M7960 made just over 395hp (400ps) and 360 lb/ft of torque (49.9kg/m). If you’re building a usable street 240SX and will be using a stock SR20DET, this is the turbo is get.

The M8270 turbo is designed for top-end power and will push over 450hp with full boost around 4,500rpm. On Tomei’s test 2.2-liter S15, equipped with cams, ECU, exhaust manifold and test pipe, the M8270 made 453hp (460ps) and 386 lb/ft of torque (53.3kg/m).

For those that are looking for big power or have built engines, this is the turbo that will deliver 500hp without the need for custom exhaust manifolds, intercooler piping, intakes, or downpipes.

Like with all Tomei ARMS turbos, replacement parts are available from Tomei.

It was only a matter of time before aftermarket companies began catching on to the whole digital wave of videos, social networking, smart phones, and everything else that surrounds us these days. Being able to reach potential buyers these days means mass coverage of reach and branding. One of the first that we’ve heard of, GReddy just announced the release of its app for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

The app uses the built-in accelerometers in the iPhone to judge when a car is accelerating, coasting, braking, and by how much. Using a simulated image, the iPhone can then “pretend” to be a GReddy boost gauge, boost controller, turbo, or blow-off valve. The GReddy app is not quite desgined to be an exact testing instrument but, as an entertainment device, it should serve car people just fine. Buy it for $1.99 HERE.

From GReddy:

Try out four awesome GReddy performance products that look, feel and sound just like the real thing! Mount your phone in your car to see the boost gauges respond to your driving with amazing realism and hear the GReddy Type-RZ blow off valve as you shift.

Now with just your iPhone you can experience what its like to transform your car into a high performance race-tuned track car! Using the accelerometers in your phone, the app can accurately calculate your throttle position and simulates how your engine is boosting.

Plug your iPhone into your car stereo and trick everyone you drive past into thinking you have a high-powered GReddy-tuned ride!

All the gauge and electronic products look photo-real, and are as close as possible to being their exact real size on your iPhone screen.

GReddy electronic boost gauges and SMI gauges.
- Needle works with super realistic animation as you boost
- Change colours between the real life black and white options
- Switch to night mode to see them light up just like the real ones do

Profec B-Spec II Boost Controller
- Functions amazingly like the real thing
- Digital display shows your boost in realtime
- Choose LO or HI boost settings

Type-RZ Blow Off Valve

To all you Gran Turismo junkies – if you’ve been scraping by on the shortened Gran Turismo 5 Prologue video game and have sunken into repetitive digital drifting exercises, the wait is over.

Today, at the 2010 E3 show, Sony Computer Entertainment America President & CEO Jack Tretton announced that Gran Turismo 5 will be released on November 2, 2010.

Sony went on to promise that the game will have more than 950 cars (including Super GT, WRC, NASCAR, and time attack), new modes, and improved online functionality. Should be good for when you feel like rally racing the HKS time attack Evo versus an Estonian Ford GT.

Gran Turismo 5 will also go on sale in two different versions, the standard and a Collector’s Edition. To justify the higher $99.99 price tag, the Collector’s Edition will come with a 1:43 scale die-cast Nissan GT-R Spec V, 300 page car guide, Gran Turismo keychain, five exclusive in-game cars, and a different box.

The video trailer that Sony debuted (see below) featured a glimpse of what the game will offer, including GT, WRC, NASCAR (for the first time), The Stig, and the same high-resolution graphics.

The K&N High-Flow Intake System for the 2009-10 Nissan 370Z 3.7L, (part no. 69-7078TS) reportedly increases horsepower by 14.2 hp at 5600 rpm over the stock intake configuration. To achieve such a performance increase, K&N replaces the original dual intake assembly; including the air boxes, air filters and intake tubes with an all-new intake design.

The new system draws air through K&N High-Flow Air Filters that increases airflow and is designed to never need to be replaced.

Protecting the cone-shaped air filters, and isolating it from engine heat, are powder coated heat shields that replace the stock air boxes.

As it passes the filter, air travels through K&N mandrel bent aluminum tubes that are formed and shaped, in the design phase, to drive a more laminar flow of air to the car’s engine.

The 69-7078TS is currently available where quality performance is sold, can be installed in 90 minutes or less and is backed by the same K&N Million Mile Limited Warranty® as all K&N OE Replacement Air Filters.

We’re still waiting with baited breath for Continental to release a club racer grade r-compound racing tire, ala RA1 or NT01, but it’ll have to wait for now. Their latest tire is an all-season touring model that promises to deliver long life and increased fuel economy. Lower rolling resistance and a more “green” footprint aren’t exactly the calling cards of a race tire but these could make decent daily driver rubber.

Release from Continental Tire below:

Continental Tire introduced its newest tire line, the ProContact with EcoPlus Technology. This premium all-season tire was developed to deliver improved fuel economy, treadwear, and reduce harmful CO2 emissions.

“Today’s consumer is very interested in how to save money and be more energy and environmentally friendly,” said Bill Caldwell, vice president of sales and marketing, Continental Tire. “Our objective was to create a tire that responds to this need without compromising other performances, like wet braking and mileage, that are the typical tradeoffs of other ‘eco’ tires. Our technical team has managed to overcome these trade-offs, and the result of their efforts is the new ProContact with EcoPlus Technology.”

Engineered using the industry’s most advanced technologies, Continental claims that the ProContact with EcoPlus Technology goes beyond other premium touring tires and makes groundbreaking advances in rolling resistance, which saves fuel and helps reduce driving costs.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that each gallon of gas saved also means that 19.4lbs less of toxic CO2 emissions are released into the Earth’s atmosphere, so every gallon of gasoline saved helps reduce fuel costs, and in turn, helps to reduce our nation’s dependence on oil.

The hallmark of the ProContact with EcoPlus Technology is delivering greater fuel economy compared to a leading competitor’s standard touring tire. In the past, reducing rolling resistance meant sacrificing wet traction and treadwear. The ProContact with EcoPlus Technology is built to deliver excellent wet traction and remarkable treadwear.

EcoPlus Technology consists of two main components, Tg-F Polymers and Plus Silane.

The Tg-F polymers are temperature-activated functional polymers that increase compound bonding, improving the wear and fuel efficiency of the tire. The second component of the EcoPlus Technology is called +Silane, an additive that works to enhance the tire’s grip on slippery roads to reduce stopping distances.

The ProContact with EcoPlus Technologyis backed by some of the strongest warranty programs and service contracts in the industry, including a 72-Month Manufacturer’s Workmanship Warranty – with 12 Months Free Replacement; 12 months of Road Hazard Coverage and a 60-day Customer Satisfaction Warranty.

The ProContact with EcoPlus Technology comes with a segment-leading 80,000-mile limited tread wear warranty. Available in a T-speed rating with a UTQG rating of 600 AB, this tire is available in a variety of 15″ to 18″ sizes to fit a wide range of vehicles for fuel-conscious consumers.

The ECON is designed to increase torque, improve gas mileage and clean exhaust emissions (less CO and HC) by supplying up to 130% higher voltage (when compared to OEM).

The new ProRacer ECON promises to optimize combustion with a stronger spark and boosts up the ignition system. The ECON is designed to increase torque, improve gas mileage and clean exhaust emissions (less CO and HC) by supplying up to 130% higher voltage (when compared to OEM).

It is also recommended for cars with heavy electrical usage to stabilize the voltage supply. The ECON can be used with either distributor style single coils or the newest direct ignition systems.

Plug and play harnesses exist for easy installation into vehicles ranging from the Honda Civic to Lexus IS to Scion xA. Universal installation is, of course, possible.

In a test by Japanese car magazine Carview, the ECON achieved a torque gain on the dyno with a Toyota Estima and increased on-track MPG when used with a FD2 Honda Civic Type-R.

“As a result of chassis dynamo test measured with a Toyota Estima with actually the ECON was installed, it achieved the torque gain in the entire range from low to high rpm.

Also, we got a result that fuel consumption was decreased from the race track lapping test performed by a racing car (FD2 Civic Type-R).

The test was occurred with keeping same lap times, not comparing the difference of lap times. By this test, we can see how much margin to secure the engine performance by installing the ECON.”

With all the talk recently about “green” and efficiency, we’ll take the opportunity to put the ProRacer ECON to the test and see if torque output and MPG can both be increased with a simple plug-n-play device. Check back soon for the results.

MSRP: $350.00, plug-n-play harness sold separately $150.00

With their own in-house project GT-R pushing more than 720whp, GReddy knows a thing or two about injecting the twin-turbo V6 VR38DETT engine with more speed.

As if the Nissan GT-R didn’t already have enough juice, GReddy has just released a new intercooler upgrade for those looking for extreme horsepower. With their own in-house project GT-R pushing more than 720whp, GReddy knows a thing or two about injecting the twin-turbo V6 VR38DETT engine with more speed. That’s a good thing for many GT-R owners, who are interested in diving into the engine to make more power.

Their new X-large Type 29 R-Spec Intercooler Kit features a lengthy name and a huge 302mm x 710mm x 115mm core. That’s a whopping 12-in. by 28-in. by 4.5-in. for those Americans in the crowd. GReddy claims that this unit is ideal for GT-Rs pushing more than 900hp and the upper grille remains open for proper engine cooling. The four end tanks are all specially designed 3-piece units for smooth flow.

The intercooler kit also includes two 40mm Type-RZ blow-off valves, polished aluminum piping, silicone hoses, clamps and mounting brackets. An airflow meter extension is required to swap the airflow meter sensor signals to the opposite banks (wires are included). The kit is designed for use with the GReddy GT-R turbo kit and the stock turbo setup. Made in Japan.

Digital dash displays are replacement instrument clusters often used in racecars since they can integrate so many information displays into one place, eliminating the need for numerous gauges. They can display RPMs, speed, water temp, oil temp, laptime, lap number and a host of other functions.

Some units, such as the Racepak IQ3, also feature a built-in datalogger for on-track data analysis. Others, such as the AiM MXL Strada, feature direct plug-in operation with such aftermarket standalone ECUs as the AEM EMS. And other still, such as the Stack ST8130, offer analog and digital integration as well as simpler layouts.

The best off-the-shelf bolt-on big brake kits use what is known as a monoblock caliper.

Most four, six and eight piston fixed calipers are made using two halves that are then bolted together. For the best rigidity and strength, as well as lower weight, monoblock brake calipers are forged out of a single piece of aluminum. This makes them as rigid as possible and helps with pedal feel.

To put things into perspective, pretty much every single major pro racing series, from NASCAR to IRL to F1, use monoblock calipers.

Keep in mind though, these puppies are not even remotely cheap. The Brembo GTR eight-piston monoblock caliper pictured above (top) uses vented titanium pistons and comes in kit form with massive two-piece rotors and billet mounting brackets. The Endless six-piston monoblock caliper pictured (bottom) is also designed for rigidity and a reduction in unsprung weight.

The only downside? Price. A front Brembo monoblock big brake kit for a Subaru WRX STI will run more than $10,000.

8. L&E Fabrication Steering Column Quickener

One of the most noticeable things in a real racing car or performance car is the steering. If you’re used to driving a truck or commuter sedan, you’ll be amazed at how much faster a racecar steers. Instead of winding the wheel to make a turn, you point and it goes.

Faster steering gives a car quicker response and is more in tune with a driver’s reactions behind the wheel. Some cars have aftermarket offerings of new, faster steering gears that replace the guts in the rack but those cars are rare. L&E Fabrication, a Colorado-based rally shop, has been building ready-to-go quick steering columns for years now.

Taking the stock steering column, L&E modifies it and fits a steering quickener. Most often fit with a 1.5:1 ratio quickener, the columns will turn the steering 1.5 turns for every turn that you make, ending up with a faster steering ratio. Although they mostly have Subaru columns off-the-shelf, they can custom modify almost any column. This is one item that we expect to take off with S13 and S14 Nissan 240SX guys, who could always use a faster steering ratio when drifting.
