Held once a year, the invite-only Super Lap Battle time attack event is the VIP track day where lap records are always guaranteed to fall. This year was no different. Sierra Sierra Enterprises’ Lancer Evolution VIII officially beat the HKS Evo for the overall top time with a blistering 1:41.046.

Take a closer look at the Cusco All-Japan Gymkhana Championship Lancer Evolution. It’s immediately obvious that their style of gymkhana is different from ours. While ours is all about entertainment, big smoke, drifts, and staying sideways, the Japanese form looks like pure autocross with a couple smoke-less spin turns thrown in.

Project Evo IX’s last track outing did not go well. On top of being outgunned power-wise in the Street AWD class (our 350whp stock turbo setup always is), we discovered that our rear limited-slip differential had given up the ghost.

We knew that we wouldn’t have the time or the budget to strap on a bigger turbo or a fancy carbon fiber rooftop before we left. We’d be facing 600whp monster Lancer Evos again with our daily driven 350whp (on race gas) street car. Not a problem for the constant underdog OR team, right?
