HSR West Historic Vintage Racing 2009 – CA Speedway

Truly classic cars live up to every bit of their reputations. Their looks are timeless, their exhaust notes intoxicating and their history memorable. Names like Shelby, Pininfarina and Porsche have been burned into the public eye with an endless slew of classic machinery.

hsr west historicLooking back at performance cars of the past can often help us appreciate the offspring that they have sired in the present. Doing the same with classic vintage racecars will only make our palms sweat even faster.

The rules are simple – if your car is 25 years old or older, it qualifies as a vintage car. If it’s a racecar as well, it’s a vintage racecar. Not quite rocket science, huh?

But the HSR West historic vintage racing series has quite a few later model machines competing, including a few Indy Cars and Porsche Cup cars. The way we see it, when it comes to nice racecars, sometimes you gotta make exceptions.

Traveling through the HSR ranks is like walking through a living, breathing racing car museum. We heard about the California Speedway, aka Auto Club Speedway, HSR West event from Aaron Kupferman of MotorsportLens.com. His father was going to be driving a Porsche Carrera in the HSR West spring races and he promised that other vintage racecars would be on hand such as Can-Am, F1 and IMSA.

We took a quick run through the schedule and were sold. Looking at the cars that were supposed to enter, we knew that more than a few millionaires were sure to be on hand. It takes some serious money to maintain and own some of these cars and these guys aren’t pro racing teams, they’re usually just one dude and his mechanic. Maybe they’ll sponsor The Octane Report or adopt us?
