Tuner Shop Feature – Works

By Richard Gantry, Photography by Joey Leh

With a line-up of tuning parts and experience in both rally and road racing, Works has become one of the most well known Mitsubishi aftermarket companies. But, just because they manufacture downpipes (as seen on the OR Project Evo IX) and exhausts, don’t assume that this is your normal “tuning” shop or that they only sell parts.

Works began in 2002 with a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII and when the US domestic Evo VIII was released, they were found themselves in a good spot. Campaigning cars in time attack, rally racing and road racing, Works began to develop and enhance their tuning.

At the forefront of Mitsubishi aftermarket tuning, Works pioneered the supercharged Eclipse and the Evo VIII, IX and X platforms. Their Lancer Ralliart Rally America rallycar is just one of their latest examples.

A move on-site to Infineon Raceway placed them alongside such racing and tuning companies as STaSIS, Flying Lizard Motorsports and the Jim Russell Racing School. With many of their customers racing in rallycross, road racing and time trial events and the Works Motorsports team planning on a Speed World Challenge entry, the trackside location was perfect.

All development and testing is carried out in-house at Works. Pete Kang, founder of Works, told us that the infamous motorsport engineering firm Prodrive was his inspiration for Works. While the WRC contracts may not have fallen towards Works yet, the professionalism and organization shines through. Well above a standard aftermarket tuning parts manufacturer, Works HQ is well lit and clean; the mark of a shop.

Inside you’ll find an all-wheel drive Dynapack hub-mounted dyno and a fabrication area. Parts are made and test fit but custom projects for customers are also tackled there. Numerous lifts and bays are also at Works, ready for service, oil changes, suspension overhauls and alignment / chassis setups for customers.
